Let's Watch a Movie – About Time

About Time was in my wishlist since forever. It is a British romantic comedy/drama released in 2013, and starring, among the others, Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams and Bill Nighy. Yesterday night I was home alone, so I prepared some delicious peanut butter pop corn, bought a coke, and put my DVD on. A few minutes after the movie started I began to remember some details about it, most of which were spoilers. And that's when it came up to my mind that I had watched this movie already, a good while ago! Nevertheless, i decided to keep on watching it, on the first place cause I really didn't remember that much, but also cause the more I was watching the more I was curious to keep on watching.

The plot is very simple, and it is mixing in a perfect way everyday life with a hint of supernatural. When he turns 21, Tim Lake is given by his father a terrible, yet extraordinary revelation. His family hides a secret: since forever, all the male born in his family acquire the ability to time travel, from the moment they turn 21. The way they can do it is very simple. They need to find somewhere dark, clench their fists, and think about the moment they want to travel to. There are a few rules to be followed, like they can only travel back in time, and visit places and times they already lived.

At the beginning Tim thinks that he wants to use this gift to acquire fame and money, but then thinks he would better use it to improve his love life. Tim is a very sweet, timid boy, and his love life is pretty disastrous; this until he meets Mary, a beautiful, sweet girl he immediately falls in love with. They meet a night in a peculiar situation: they both participate with their friend to a blind date, where they meet another couple in the dark. They spend some time chatting, but they have no idea of how the other people look like. They only find out once the night is over, and Tim, who fancied already the lovely girl he spent the night chatting with, is thunderstruck by Mary's beauty once he sees her. The good thing is that Mary fancies him too, and they exchange phone numbers.

When he goes back home, Tim realises that his friend and landlord Harry, who is a script writer, just had the worst night of his life, because the main actor playing in his piece forgot the lines, and brought everybody to a huge disaster. Tim is desolated, and tries to fix things for him. He travels back in time, goes with Harry to see the play, and sneaks to the dressing rooms to suggest the main actor to revise his lines. The night goes perfect, the play is a triumph; but soon Tim realises that in this way he changed history, he never went out with his friend and he never met Mary.

He does everything he can to meet her again, and actually manages to see her to a Kate Moss photo exhibition. There only is a problem: Mary doesn't remember his at all, because that night together never happened. So, Tim makes every effort possible to make Mary fall in love with him again...

As I said before, what I really love about this movie is that it magisterially mixes real life with supernatural, and wants the public to see their life under another perspective. Cause what we see during these two hours is Tim and Mary everyday life, they face everyday problems and live an ordinary family routine. Tim only tries to make things better, changing them going back in time.

The movie also touches serious arguments, like death, grief, auto destruction.
When something very sad happens to Tim, he travels back in time so often to live again happy moments with the people he loves; but there always is a price to pay. He finds out that taking the easiest path is not always the right decision to take, and that sometimes people just have to make choices, and stick to them. They need to stop looking back, and try to enjoy as their best their present, like if they decided to go back in time only to live happily every second of that specific day.

If you haven't already, watch this movie, you will love it.
