K-Drama Love – I Hear Your Voice

Here we are, talking about Korean Drama once again! I've been
watching a few last year, and despite not loving all of them, I
really enjoyed and loved some others (will need to write down a list,
really!). On the top of them stands A Korean Odyssey, which is
so dear to me probably because it's the first one I've ever watched,
but also because it was such a pleasure to follow (post here,
if you're interested).
Today though, we're talking about the first K-Drama of 2019 for me,
and that is I Hear Your Voice. This is not a recent one (was
produced in 2013), but it's available on Netflix, it's one of
the sweetest, loveliest K-Drama I've ever watched!
I Hear Your Voice belongs to those K-Dramas set in the present
days, dealing with normal people, everyday life, a touch of
supernatural to spice up everything, and a mystery to solve. It is
also a Law Drama, meaning that it has to do with the world of the
law.
In fact, the main character of the story is Jang Hye-sung, a
public defender. She is a woman with a strong personality, a
bit stubborn and not really in love with her job... she actually only
does it lazily, without believing in the main purpose (defending
people) of it.

Jang Hye-sung chose to take the path of law because of an accident
happened to her when she was young. She witnessed a murder, together
with her friend Seo Do-yeon. The two of them saw a man driving
a truck run over a car, and then getting out and finally killing the
car diver with a pipe. In the car was also a little boy, Park
Soo-ha, and the murderer was ready to kill him as well, when
Hye-sung called out for him, distracting and scaring him. The
murderer gave up killing the boy, and fled away.
During the trial accusing the man, whose name is Min Joon-gook,
of murder, Hye-sung and Do-yeon decide to enter the room to expose
themselves as witnesses of the murder (as there were no proofs to
accuse the man of having killed Soo-ha's father, and the police don't
believe to the little boy). When the two girls are ready to enter the
room though, Do-yeon changes her mind at the last minute, scared of
the consequences that exposing herself might arise. So Hye-sung alone
enters the room, and accuses Min Joon-gook of murder. Furious, Min
Joon-gook jumps on the girl, tries to strangle her, and promise to
find her and kill her.
Little Soo-ha is grateful to Hye-sung for having helped him, and
promises the girl to forever protect her. Also, the moment Min
Joon-gook was ready to kill him, Soo-ah developed the ability to read
people mind.

Ten years have passed, Hye-sung and Soo-ha have taken different path
and lost contact, but Soo-ah never stopped looking for the girl,
forever grateful and in love with her. Ten years after their first
encounter, Hye-sung finds a job as public defender, and Soo-ha finds
her. Just on time for Min Joon-gook to be released from prison, and
put his revenge against the two of them in action.
As all K-Dramas, I Hear Your Voice is based on a small group of
characters, main and recurrent, and we can't but fall in love for
them all. All of them have a story to tell, and no detail is given
for nothing. All the pieces of the puzzle go to the right place at
the end of the show, giving its big, complete picture a meaning.
The main hopeful, idealistic message of the show is about love,
trust, and the good in people, and it sticks to it 'til the end.
Thanks to Soo-ha ability Hye-sung learns to trust the people she
defends and always fight for the truth. The love story between the
main characters makes us dream of eternal love, of two people linked
by the red thread of destiny, who will always find themselves, and
fall in love again. The story of Min Joon-gook makes us understand
that there is always a reason behind people action, and that it's
never too late to admit their own mistakes and wrongs.

Another message I loved from the show, is always be humble and learn
from other people, because that is what makes us better. I find it
touching and very true, because we all grow as human beings and
become better when we are open to new ideas, new opinions and aspects
of life.
In short, I really, really, really suggest you to give this show a go
and it's only 18 episodes long; it was meant to be 16, but its
popularity made the producers go for extending it with two more
episodes. That means that at a certain point we can feel the plot is
a bit stretched up, but still, that doesn't take anything from
enjoying the show.
